7 Games From The 90’s That Are Played Even Today

The 90’s was a great time to be born in. It was before the advent of the internet so our childhood wasn’t spent staring at a computer screen but actually going outside and playing with our friends. Every game had a new set of rules every-day and the bickering fights that ensued were more fun than one can imagine. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and I’m sure you’ll feel the nostalgia of our child-hood when you recall playing these games.

1.       Gilli Danda our very own version of cricket.

This game is played with a large wooden stick known as the danda which is used to hit another stick reduced on both sides known as the gilli. The aim of the game is to hit the gilli with the danda as far as possible.

2.       Kho Kho

Kho kho is definitely one of everyone’s childhood favourites and although this game needs no introduction because of its sheer popularity let me elaborate a little. It involves two teams which are required to chase each other down and try to get the opposite team ‘out’ by tagging their own team players.

3.       Kabaddi

Kabaddi also widely known as the national game of India is incredible amounts of fun. The game might not be all that popular but is regaining momentum. There are two teams consisting of seven players, each of which have their own designated areas. The aim of the game is to go into the other teams area and get them ‘out’ all while repeating the word kabaddi without losing your breath.

4.       Catch-catch

This is the simplest game ever and the best way to kill boredom. One simply throws a ball to their opponent who’s only job is to catch it. Even then we all know that one person who had butter fingers and almost always dropped the catch!

5.       Chuppa Chuppi or Hide and Seek

Luckily this is one of the games that hasn’t lost its charm in the years. I don’t even think this game really needs explaining! It’s of the best games I’ve ever played. Running around as kids, making sure you don’t get caught are the fond memories I remember every time I think of playing chuppa chuppi.

6.       Chor-sipahi or chor-police

I’ve never met anyone who hasn’t played this game and I’m sure you have too. There are two people, one is the chor and the other sipahi. The sipahi has to catch the chor is order to win the game after which the titles are exchanges and the chor becomes the sipahi and vice-versa.

7.       Gully Cricket

We Desis love our cricket so naturally we’ve invented our very own form of cricket where ‘one tup’ is ‘out’ and the stumps are merely pieces of sticks or rocks we found lying around the street. And of course if the ball left the make shift ground you out!

When we commemorate the golden days that is childhood, we relate to the most playful times. You must have got an idea what I am referring to. It is the time we played games. Nothing could give that ecstasy of life but games. It is rare that one can see a child play the same game with that enthusiasm and eagerness. Despite many obstructions that a child or a student is dominated by, there are a few games that are still being played. One of them is cricket and whenever we relate to cricket, we definitely relate to the word Cosco. Not matter what brand the ball was manufactured by, the name that a cricket lover was used to is Cosco. 

Let me take down the memory lane of the seven most popular games that we played in the 80’s and 90’s and encourage everyone to continue the legacy. 

1.      Cricket: This game is by far the most popular game not just in one or two countries but across the globe. Cricket always united the colonial friends and cousins to play together and eventually develop that friendliness which is hardly seen now. The bat made of any wooden piece and three sticks used as stamps, who can forget those days? The so called Cosco ball was the heart of the game. A child would eagerly wait to reach home after school, to change uniform and rush to bang the doors of the friends. Now people are busier sitting in a couch and playing video games and PS3, X box and many such games that make one ideal.

2.      Musical Chair: Wow what a game this was. Everyone gathering in the open space and playing to the tunes of music and enjoying the roundabout of men was really fun. Who do you see playing this anymore?

3.      Hide and Seek: Another exciting game in the list is Hide and Seek. It gave adrenaline rush whenever we had to be searched by our friends.

4.      Skipping: This game definitely met the health goals along with the count one kept of skipping without a break.

5.      Chinese Whisper: How about that game which taught us what manipulation can be like? Yes it is Chinese whisper. It was full of fun and excitement.

6.      Hopscotch: This maneuver through some boxes drawn on the plain surface did bring smiles on everyone’s face specially girls.

7.      Pittu: This is the last of the seven games that we can’t forget and get nostalgic thinking about. The ball used was Cosco, the same ball used in cricket. 

The mind not corrupted then with the advanced technology made us creative enough to come up with those game ideas and the most played of all was cricket. I remember playing with my brothers and dad in the playground nearby and always fighting to bat first. I could only play with the so called Cosco ball as it was the name anyone knew, even a kid who had just begun to play cricket. Cricket and Cosco are synonymous and can’t be separated ever. Let few things be the way they are! That retains the charm. Sometimes wrong sounds right, doesn’t it?
